Oura ring is a wearable digital device that fits on a finger and measures the quality of the wearer’s sleep. The ring tracks respiration rate, heart rate, blood volume pulse, temperature, motion in 3D. The measurements are achieved by way of a thermal sensor, IR LED and optics for pulse and a combined 3D accelerometer and gyroscope. Pulse data is read directly from the palmar artery.
Through these measurements the ring offers information on:
- Bedtime guidance
- Sleep quality measurements
- Sleep stage tracking (REM, deep, light)
- Sleep trends
- Oura readiness insights
- Recovery optimization
- Resting heart rate
- Heart rate variability (HRV)
- Body temperature trends
- Respiratory rate
- Oura activity insights
- Daily activity goal
- Always on - Daytime activity tracking
- Steps and calories
- Inactivity alerts
- Activity balance
Oura was founded by CEO Petteri Lahtela, COO Tommi Pyykkonen and CTO and head of design Kari Kivela. The company and initial product were released in 2015 after a Kickstarter campaign that garnered $650,000 from its initial $100,000 goal.
