O firmware permite que uma câmera digital envie imagens para a impressora sem precisar da assistência de um computador ou qualquer software especial de edição de imagem.
Uma câmara compatível com PictBridge liga-se directamente a uma impressora compatível com PictBridge com um cabo USB padrão. Depois dos dispositivos terem estabelecido uma ligação, a câmara "fala" com a impressora e pergunta quais as funções PictBridge que a impressora tem. PictBridge is vendor-neutral but both the camera and the printer must be PictBridge-compliant for the software to work. The standard is overseen by the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA). To determine whether a camera or printer is PictBridge-compliant, look for the PictBridge logo or consult the product specifications listed in the owner's manual.
